“The inexpressible depth of music, so easy to understand and yet so inexplicable, is due to the fact that it reproduces all the emotions of our innermost being, but entirely without reality and remote from its pain...Music expresses only the quintessence of life and of its events, never these themselves.” - Oliver Sacks

  • The Music Therapy Process

Music Therapists are credentialed professionals that follow a detailed and ethical process established by the Certification Board of Music Therapists. All services at Making Waves Music therapy are provided by Kayla Connick, MT-BC. Connect with her below if you have any questions about starting the process or click the next arrow to read through the steps.

  • 1. Intake/Interview/Consultation

First, the music therapist needs to know more about your needs, desires for music therapy, any goals you would like to work on, any musical preferences, and general information about who will be receiving music therapy services. This information will better inform the music therapist when conducting the first assessment session, the next step in the process. Intake interviews and consultations are typically 10-30 minutes in length and are free.

  • 2. Assessment

An initial music therapy assessment session is necessary to evaluate potential goals in areas of cognitive, psychological, communicative, physical/motor, sensory, social, spiritual, and musical needs. Within the assessment the music therapists meets the client where they are at and mutually discover the types of musical experiences preferred by the client that can support reaching these goals.

  • 3. Implementing Music Therapy

The music therapist and client agree on a set time and frequency for music therapy sessions to occur. The music therapist writes a session plan containing goals with clear and measurable objectives to work on within sessions. After a determined amount of sessions the music therapist will provide well documented and detailed progress reports to show client progress over time within the course of music therapy treatment.
